Real Madrid said France captain Kylian Mbappé has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee after tests carried out by the club’s medical department.
The club issued the diagnosis following the injury Mbappé suffered while playing for France in their 1-0 win over Turkey, a match in which he opened the scoring and left the pitch shortly afterwards. Real Madrid’s statement was reported by national and international outlets.
France’s new coach Zinedine Zidane said the team would not risk the forward in the near term. Zidane told reporters they were “not going to take any risks” and that he would not use Mbappé in the three Nations League matches scheduled over the next 10 days.
The fixtures cited by reports see France travel to Belgium on Monday, then host Italy on October 2 and Belgium on October 5.
Real Madrid’s first match after the international break is against Villarreal on October 10. Reports said that date could be too soon for Mbappé to return to club action, though Spanish daily AS has been cited as saying the forward would “certainly” be ready for the Clasico against Barcelona on October 25.
