A Magistrate Court in Ilesa, Osun State, has ruled against a woman, Rhoda Adu, ordering her to pay ₦150,000 to her boyfriend, Olapitan Sola, after she failed to fulfill a visit she promised. The case stemmed from Rhoda collecting ₦3,000 as transport fare from Sola but subsequently switching off her phone and failing to show up.
The incident left Sola feeling defrauded and emotionally distressed, prompting him to report the matter to the Ayeso Police Station. Rhoda was eventually arrested and brought before the court.
During the trial, Sola provided compelling evidence, including proof of the ₦3,000 mobile transfer and WhatsApp messages exchanged between him and Rhoda, which detailed the arrangement.
Magistrate Akogun Oludare, in her ruling, ordered Rhoda to refund the ₦3,000 transport fare and pay an additional ₦100,000 for breach of agreement. Furthermore, she was directed to pay ₦50,000 as special damages for emotional distress caused to Sola.
Magistrate Oludare emphasized that the ruling serves as a deterrent to discourage individuals from engaging in deceitful and exploitative behavior.
The judgment has sparked mixed reactions, with some commending the court for addressing emotional and financial grievances in relationships, while others question the legal implications of such personal disputes being resolved through the judiciary.
