The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast cloudy skies, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across large parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday, and warned that strong winds may precede some storms.
NiMet made the prediction in a three-day weather outlook released on Sunday covering the northern, North-Central and southern regions of Nigeria. The agency forecast patches of clouds over the northern region on Monday morning followed by thunderstorms and moderate rains over most parts of the region later in the day (Vanguard, Nairametrics).
For the North-Central region, NiMet predicted cloudy conditions on Monday morning, with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains later over the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger and Plateau states. In the South, the agency said cloudy skies with chances of light rain were expected over parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Cross River and Akwa Ibom, with intermittent moderate rains over most of the southern region later in the day (Vanguard, Nairametrics).
On Tuesday, NiMet expects patches of clouds in the north with morning thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Taraba and Adamawa, before thunderstorms with moderate rainfall spread across most of the region later in the day. The North-Central region may see morning thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Benue, Kogi, Plateau and Nasarawa, followed by isolated thunderstorms and moderate rain later.
In the South on Tuesday, NiMet forecast morning light rain over parts of Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers and Akwa Ibom. By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rains were expected over Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states (Vanguard, Nairametrics).
On Wednesday, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms and moderate rain over parts of Taraba, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe, with thunderstorms and moderate rains spreading across most of the northern region later. The North-Central region could see thunderstorms and light rain over Nasarawa and Plateau in the morning, followed by moderate rains across most of the region by afternoon and evening. The South may have intermittent light rain in the morning over parts of the South-East and coastal areas, with moderate rains across the region later in the day (Vanguard, Nairametrics).
NiMet warned that strong winds might precede thunderstorms in affected areas and advised residents to fasten loose objects and take precautions against possible wind damage. The agency also urged the public to avoid driving during heavy rain, to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms and to stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches or broken trees (Vanguard, Nairametrics).
The agency advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports and flight documentation for effective operational planning. Nairametrics also noted that NiMet has issued several weather advisories during 2026, including earlier warnings about possible flash flooding in coastal areas and dust-related visibility risks reported in previous months (Nairametrics).
