The Lagos Polo Club has imposed an indefinite entry ban on billionaire real estate mogul Sir Olu Okeowo following an alleged assault of a club staff member by one of his security aides during a high-profile event at the club’s Ikoyi grounds last weekend.
In a statement signed by the Club’s Secretary, Mr. Adeyemi Oreagba, and released on Wednesday, Okeowo who is the Chairman of Gibraltar Group was declared “barred from entry into the club premises, either as a guest or otherwise, until further notice.”
According to the Club, the incident occurred on Saturday, October 18, during the Reminisce Event hosted at the club. The statement alleges that one of Okeowo’s security personnel “violently assaulted a staff member while he was performing his duty.”
“This action of the security personnel attached to Sir Olu Okeowo negates one of the Club’s main ground rules on decorum and member conduct,” Oreagba stated.
“Accordingly, Sir Olu Okeowo is hereby banned from entering the Club premises, either as a guest or otherwise, until further notice.”
The Polo Club’s Main Committee reportedly reviewed the matter after confirming the assault through witnesses and involved parties. The committee reiterated that members bear full responsibility for the conduct of their guests, security personnel, and domestic staff within the Club premises.
“The Club places great importance on the welfare and dignity of all staff,” the statement added. “We have zero tolerance for any form of assault by members or guests.”
The ban which is a rare disciplinary measure within one of Lagos’ most exclusive social institutions has triggered heated discussions across elite circles, where Okeowo is known for his philanthropy, opulent lifestyle, and frequent appearance at high-society events.
