Ikorodu City recorded a 2-0 victory over defending champions Rangers at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos on Sunday, securing the club’s first-ever league win against Rangers.
Super Eagles midfielder Aderemi Adeoye opened the scoring inside six minutes with a free-kick that found the bottom corner. Ikechukwu Junior added a second in the second half, also from a free-kick, to seal the win.
The result and the goals were reported by Complete Sports and Daily Post. Both outlets described the goals as expertly taken free-kicks and noted the significance of the outcome for Ikorodu City. Complete Sports also described the victory as an impressive performance at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.
Speaking after the match, Ikorodu City goalkeeper Michael Atata praised his teammates for maintaining focus. He told the club’s media, “Today was all about concentration, from the first minute to the end of the game. We knew it was a game that would demand a lot from us, both mentally and physically. It was about giving our all, putting in the right effort and making sure we came out with a win. I’m grateful for it.” Complete Sports and Daily Post carried his comments.
Complete Sports reported Atata added that the team must remain focused for its next fixture, saying, “We take each game as it comes. We try to stay present and take things easy. We will give our hundred percent in each game, so we are grateful for today’s victory.” Complete Sports.
Daily Post identified Rangers as the side of coach Fidelis Ilechukwu. Ikorodu City will next face Sporting Lagos in their league programme, according to both reports.
The win gives Ikorodu City three points against the reigning champions and will raise expectations ahead of the local derby with Sporting Lagos.
