For the first time ever in its 18-year history , Facebook has lost daily users\u00a0 which CEO\u00a0Mark Zuckerberg\u00a0believes was caused by the\u00a0TikTok\u00a0boom.<\/p>\n
\u2018People have a lot of choices for how they want to spend their time, and apps like TikTok are growing very quickly,\u2019\u00a0Zuckerberg said during an earnings call Wednesday, according to the\u00a0Washington Post.<\/p>\n
Facebook reported a drop of nearly 500,000 in daily logins during the last three months of 2021. Zuckerberg reiterated that Meta \u2013\u00a0the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp \u2013 is pushing hard to develop its short-form video Reels in an effort to compete with TikTok.<\/p>\n
\u2018This is why our focus on Reels is so important over the long term,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n
Facebook, which now only has\u00a01.93 billion users logging in each day, also saw its\u00a0shares plunge more than 20 percent in extended trading on Wednesday\u00a0after unexpectedly heavy spending on its Metaverse project led to a rare decline in its fourth-quarter profit.<\/p>\n
Meta saw its stock fall 22.6 percent to $249.90 in after-hours trading, wiping about\u00a0$200 billion off the company\u2019s\u00a0market value.<\/p>\n
The company heavily invested in its Reality Labs segment \u2013 which includes its virtual reality headsets and augmented reality technology \u2013 during the final quarter of 2021, accounting for much of the profit decline.<\/p>\n
Zuckerberg, who is worth approximately $107 billion, held more than 398 million shares of Meta at the end of 2020, according to\u00a0Investopedia. Based on his reported holdings, the CEO personally experienced a more than $29 billion loss when the company\u2019s stock fell Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Analysts according to Daily Mail reports allege investors had expected signs of declining users growth but were \u2018taken aback\u2019 by the amount of ad dollars the company lost in wake of TikTok\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n
TikTok is dominating the short-form user-generated video market, despite Meta offering its own Reels product on Instagram.<\/p>\n
Data indicates the platform lost consumers to TikTok and\u00a0\u00a0saw lover revenue from ads destined for its short-form videos, according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n
The figures, however, should not have blindsided investors as there have been repeated signs that Meta was trying to compete with the new video format.<\/p>\n
Last summer,\u00a0Instagram chief Adam Mosseri moved the platform\u2019s focus to embrace videos instead of its usual emphasis on photo-sharing, a move Mosseri said was inspired by TikTok\u2019s rising popularity.<\/p>\n
Zuckerberg emphasized the move during Wednesday\u2019s earnings call, reiterating that Instagram would continue to focus on Reels.<\/p>\n
The CEO has also been adamant that Meta\u2019s long-term success is dependent on his Metaverse vision.<\/p>\n
However, figures reveal the company has lost over $20 billion on Metaverse projects over the last three years.<\/p>\n
The data also revealed that consumers are being less interested in the Facebook platform, specifically in Africa and Latin America, where the loss of daily users was greatest. Some analysts allege this shows the product may be globally saturated.<\/p>\n
Meta\u2019s fourth quarter earnings reports also indicate the platform\u2019s user growth has stalled in the US and Europe, a trend witnessed over the last several years.<\/p>\n
However, Facebook previously made up for the stall by adding new users worldwide.<\/p>\n
While the decline in daily users could suggest the Facebook marketplace is saturated, analysts note\u00a0Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger continue to add users.\u00a0The company saw a growth in the number of users logging into Facebook monthly, despite the decline in daily users.<\/p>\n
The platform also reported a slightly higher revenue per user amount.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Facebook has made significant investments in its virtual and augmented reality hardware ventures, including hiring more than 10,000 people to work in the Reality Labs segment and rebranding the company to Meta.<\/p>\n
\u2018Last year was about putting a stake in the ground for where we are heading, this year is going to be about executing,\u2019 Zuckerberg said Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The Reality Labs segment is Meta\u2019s division tasked with building Zuckerberg\u2019s Metaverse vision.<\/p>\n
The CEO has described it as a \u2018virtual environment\u2019 you can enter instead of just viewing it on a screen. Theoretically, it would be a place where people can meet, work and play using virtual reality headsets, augmented reality glasses, smartphone apps or other devices.<\/p>\n
Meta Platforms Inc., formerly Facebook, took on its new name last fall to signal Zuckerberg\u2019s ambition to become a Metaverse company \u2013 and distance itself from mounting scandals after a whistleblower claimed the social media giant harms children and undermines democracy in pursuit of \u2018astronomical profits.\u2019<\/p>\n
Since then, the company has been shifting resources and hiring engineers \u2013 including from competitors like Apple and Google \u2013 who can help realize his vision.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
