NNN<\/a>: The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC)<\/a>, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with International Police (Interpol) to grant the commission access to interpol database.<\/em><\/strong>
ICPC<\/a> will utilise the access in profiling Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs), and money laundering and illicit financial flows suspects.
The Chairman of the ICPC<\/a>, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye<\/a>, made this known at the end of a meeting by Heads of Nigeria<\/a>n Law Enforcement Agencies with top officials of Interpol in Lyon, France<\/a>.
At the meeting, the ICPC<\/a> boss discussed how the anti-corruption agency and the country could take advantage of the Interpol database in profiling suspects.
\u201cThe Commission will develop the habit of issuing notices especially on high profile suspects. Such notices will be seen globally on PEPs in particular,\u201d Owasanoye said.
The Chairman also disclosed that the Commission would join the Global Focal Point Network coordinated by Interpol as part of measures to tighten the noose around corrupt and criminal persons.
The Interpol is expected to support the law enforcement agencies in Nigeria<\/a> through strengthening of information sharing, utilisation of the organisation\u2019s database of global suspects and prevention of incursion and influx of migrant terrorist fighters into Nigeria<\/a>.
The Interpol briefed the Nigeria<\/a>n delegation on Operation Gemini, a special project focusing on trans-border organised crime involving migration, human trafficking, drug trafficking corruption and financial crimes.
The international police also held special sessions with the delegation which were devoted to international and regional cooperation in law enforcement, operational methods of interpol and strategies for data and information sharing.
Also on Interpol policing capabilities, role of National Central Bureau (NCB)<\/a> in Nigeria<\/a>, and Nigeria<\/a> Border Management strategies, integration of Nigeria<\/a> Law Enforcement Databases with Interpol NCB<\/a>.
Under the MoU signed with the Interpol, the Nigeria<\/a>n law enforcement agencies will have unrestricted access to global criminal databases.
It is expected that this fresh collaboration will boost the capacity of law enforcement agencies in Nigeria<\/a> to fulfill their mandates.
The Nigeria<\/a>n delegation to Interpol was made up of top officials of the National Central Bureau Abuja (NCBA)<\/a>, Nigeria<\/a> Police, Nigeria<\/a>n Navy, Nigeria<\/a>n Immigration Service (NIS) and\u00a0 Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC<\/a>).
Others are the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU)<\/a>, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)<\/a>, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Person (NAPTIP<\/a>) and the ICPC<\/a>.
The high point of the meeting bet<\/a>ween the Nigeria<\/a>n delegation and Interpol was the signing of MoU between the international police and ICPC<\/a>, NFIU<\/a>, NAPTIP<\/a>, NDLEA<\/a> and EFCC<\/a> which granted the law enforcement agencies access to the organisation\u2019s databases. <\/p>\n
